adulthood & kittenhood

this saturday i took my driver's test and finally became a real adult.

basically:
1 i was very nervous
2 it was very easy

i didn't feel especially nervous, but i was nervous in a very physical way, akin to how one might feel speaking in public or to a cute boy. my hands were shaking as i fumbled through my wallet for my learner's permit, shaking when the tester had me sign some form, and shaking still when he had me prove i could turn on the high beams.

but fortunately, as the test went on and i realized how straightforward it was, i calmed down. you're allowed three chances at parallel parking, but i only needed one. the most difficult part of the road test was driving through the parking lot: the 15 mph speed limit had me looking down at the odometer constantly to make sure i didn't go over, which threatened to distract me from important things like stop signs and other cars.

most importantly, i passed! they're going to mail my real driver's license to me, but here's the temporary one they gave me for the next two weeks:

also, since i've been home i've fallen in love with my sister's kitten, whom i've christened ferocia. her given name is 'axis time,' which is possibly some anime reference i don't get.

she is completely fierce and taken to rearing up on her hind legs like a tyrannosaurus. her other hobbies include tearing into the throat of a stuffed cat handbag, which looks kind of like this, and dragging it around the room. she also chases her own tail and purrs incredibly loudly.

half the pictures i tried to take of her are blurry because she won't sit still, but i did get a few good ones.

cat alarm clock

last night i decided that to catch my 11:05 train this morning i'd have to leave bexley by 10:20. i set my cell phone alarm for 9 am with a backup alarm at 9:30 am, so i would have time to shower and finish packing. i plugged the phone into my power strip to charge overnight.

fast forward to 9:55 am this morning. my phone's dead, the alarms never went off, and i probably only woke up because andré was bothering me. genius point: when i rearranged my room a few days ago, i never plugged the power strip back in.

i have no time to shower, and 25 minutes to get dressed and finish packing. fortunately, i do end up catching my train home, but without andré's help, i may have missed it.

on the train, i spend most of my time looking out the window at graffiti and trying to decide what my tag will be when i become a graffiti artist.

also i watched margot at the wedding, eavesdropped on other people's conversations, and did three crosswords.

summer in cambridge

on friday afternoon katharine chu and i explored mount auburn cemetery, the first landscaped cemetery in america or something like that. it is pretty gorgeous. the cherry on top, though, was being rewarded with a totally unexpected view of the cambridge/boston cityscape after a hot and exhausting climb to the top of washington tower [i think it said on a plaque that there were 97 steps, added on to climbing to the top of the hill that the tower is on].

i found a picture here of the view of boston, but friday was a much clearer day. there's a video on youtube that doesn't do it justice either, but gives you an idea.

wish i had brought my camera.

on saturday, kf, pr, & i took a leisurely walk down memorial drive to the cambridge river festival. we walked around, sipping on lemonade squeezed right before our very eyes, scored free chips and honey bunches of oats and burts bees line smoothing eye creme ['now get all the youthful without the yuck'], and expressed ourselves with sidewalk chalk. we also saw a man's checkered-shorts-covered butt get squeezed right in front of us. gross.

and i had a delicious twist cone with rainbow sprinkles.
