in celebration of me & MIT's one-monthiversary
Two weekends ago, Meara, Lauren, & I were hanging out in our room, and Meara was on Lauren's laptop and Lauren was like, "wah wah wah, Meara, I have to do physics," and Meara was like, "NEVAR!", so I, being the fantastic roommate that I am, was like, "Meara, let's go on a PHOTO SAFARI!"
Armed with my digital camera, I took Meara on an exciting voyage through Bexley, capturing unsuspecting residents on film in the process. [Sometimes said residents were not wearing any pants, but I thought that would not be appropriate to put on the Internet.]
So I now present to you my new home:

Yeah, it's kinda like that.

"A tale of love, passion, and a murder most foul!"
On Monday, after spending < $20 on four items of clothing at the Garment District [black-and-pink polka-dotted skirt and ratty cardigan from the $1.50/pound pile and Liger tee & darling cardigan from upstairs], I did a little grocery shopping at Star Market, then went to Zeta Psi to mooch dinner that Justen helped cook.
After dinner the frat had a boys-only house meeting and Lauren and I peaced out. We're walking back to bexxx when we pass a young woman with shortish hair who [according to Lauren] did a head-swivel when she passed us. We go a few paces past her, and then she stops us, and is like, "I'm modelhunting. Have you heard of Vidal Sassoon? ...blah blah blah... I'll give you an A-line bob for free."
Fast forward to me not going to my chem lecture this afternoon in favour of taking the T to get my hair cut in a salon on Newbury St. For the low low price of free. Cha-ching!
It's probably never going to look as cute as it does now again because she used all this product and blow dried it and ironed it for about a million years. But currently it's pretty adorable, in a sleek, mature, 1920s way. I'll probably take a picture sometime.
In other news, tonight Johnny Depp won out over Dom Monaghan. :O
Voicemail: Hey, it's Sam. [WTF? ohhh. *recognises Mom's voice*] LSC has a free sneak preview of Corpse Bride tonight with Johnny Depp, and I know you're a fan. So I wanted to know if you wanted to wait in line for tickets with me, and then see it, otherwise I'll be bored.
So of course I called him back immediately, but it was already past 6, when the tickets were available, and he was like, "wahwahwah, I'm cooking tonight, so I'm trapped in the kitchen, but you can come over and eat."
And I was like, "um, that'll be the third night in a row and I don't want to be a grand queen mooch extraordinaire."
And he was like, "it's okay, we make more than enough food."
So I was like, "okay. Justen, let's go." [Because Justen knows the secret passcode to be let into the house and I feel like less of a mooch if I go with an actual pledge.]
When we get there, some random junior is like, "Sam [because they sometimes forget his name is "Mom"], I have an extra ticket."
And Mom looks at me and I make a pouty face and although I can tell it is tearing his heart in two a little bit, he says, "[almeda], do you want to go on a date with Will?" And I am like, "heck yeah!"
So I got to see Corpse Bride. For free. And it was fabulous. And Tim Burton is probably my one true love. And so I missed the season premiere of Lost. Someone somewhere recorded it for posterity; I can watch it whenever I want. And skip the commercials!
PS: I'm not failing any of my classes yet. Brilliant scores on all my psets thusfar.

Roommates: a learning experience
So apparently I laughed in my sleep last night, according to Lauren, who was up tooling.
And I never would have known had I been in a single!

FIVE! TWENTY! FIFTEEN! FUCK!
Suitemate [Lauren&I+BrianG] bonding last night. Frat party = Chinese drinking game + foosball + fun. Then 4th West for peach schnapps and mad dancing.
Brian: ARE YOU ROCKING OUT, BITCHES?
He is pretty much hilarious, and not really at all how people described him. Although he does try to go to mass every Sunday, which is kind of impressive.
Then today was the bexxx trip. We went to Rockport, and watched Crash on the bus ride up. Really intense. I liked it a lot, in a heart-wrenching sort of way.
At Rockport we [about 10 people at a time] went out on a private boat with a jet motor [pretend I know stuff about boats] and there were really soft leather seats and I got to drive the boat and I only spilled Coke all over myself/the boat once. And it was really fun, which was kind of surprising to me. Because I never really understood the whole boating thing. But yeah, fun. And we got caps with the name of the boat on them and we all wore them and sat in a row of rocking chairs on the dock. Which looked kind of cultish. Some kid took pictures which I would really like to see.
And there was a boat called "She Who Must Be Obeyed." Lauren took a picture of me with it, but knowing her photo-developing habits, it will probably be available next summer.
After the boat trip, we went around the touristy part with quaint little shops. I bought a little pink t-shirt [youth large] with seagulls. And we had "the best ice cream in Rockport." Mmm, pistachio.
And then we had lobsters for lunch, except not me, because besides finding lobsters ultra-creepy, I have that vegetarian thing. But I wore a lobster bib backwards like a superhero. And we [Lauren, Justen, two other bexxx frosh] played the part of the kids table, putting spoons on our noses and having generally way more fun than everyone else.
Good times, good times.

if a picture's worth a thousand words. . .
then this entry is worth a LOT of words.
Lauren finally got her pictures from last week developed, so here's a pirated photo update for you.
SENIOR HAUS TRIP:

It's a special place.

So we walk into a room that says "please barge in" on the door and are looking around when all of a sudden BAM holyfuckingshit there are KNIVES ON THE WALL. Note the double sodomizer. [In chef's terms, a carving fork.] So when we met the guy who lives there we started pestering him to cook us a meal with all his knives, but that hasn't panned out yet.

Kiki wins Pretty Pretty Princess. And he IS the prettiest princess.

Only at MIT, right?

He's a special boy.
THE VOYAGE HOME:

So I'm like, "HEY, A SHOPPING CART. I'M TOO LAZY TO WALK HOME. HOW ABOUT YOU GIVE ME A RIDE?" Biggest. mistake. of my life.

After the long trip up stairs, through the Infinite Corridor, across the street against the light, I ended up parked in front of a sprinkler. Go team.
MISCELLANY:

Temporary roommates. Aww.

Mom. <3

Kiki's condom collection.

I'm a beast.

Our room is too pretty! And by our, I mean Lauren's and mine, not Meara's and mine. Where Meara is the girl in the picture with me and Lauren is my roommate. Dig?
Peace.

we will / we will / rock you
I managed to finish and turn in all my problem sets on time, fuck yeah. Not bad for the second week of classes.
And I even slept last night. In fact, I had about as much sleep as I've been getting on non-tooling nights, which admittedly isn't saying much. I'll probably sleep a lot this weekend, but no classes on suicide!Monday, cha-ching! [MIT students are guaranteed one holiday per month, so we don't overstress and kill ourselves. I'm sure that's not how they word it, but you get the idea.]
And I think this Sunday is a Bexxxley-bonding trip to the beach.
Also today: I got mail, which is always exciting. My last two checks from my summer work & a sexy post card from M. w00t!
Tonight is a party at my favourite frat, which should be fun.
The only thing raining a bit on the parade [besides the literal rain, which is growing a little tiresome at this point], is that I have a cold which is kind of kicking my ass. I mean, I'll take the sexy!voice. Constant nose-activity/coughing up my lung = not so much.

i got soul, but i'm not a soldier
Things I don't like:
But other than that, life's pretty sweet. Our two friends shocked us by pledging with Zeta Psi, so now we have rush girl tee-shirts. Which are darling. Except they're white and we were both wearing black bras, but we put them on anyway because we are slutty frat girls. Muah.
I know y'all go to other colleges where the frats are probably a little different and you're like *GASP* ALMEDA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE? But honestly, Zeta Psi is the most darling group of darling boys evar. They are precious.
Especially Mom. Whom I think I might not have written about before, which is kind of surprising to me, because I'm practically obsessed. [actually, I just looked it up and I did mention him during CPW. See 9:15.]
So, yeah, he was our group leader during CPW. And then one night we visited his frat, and they were having a chill party, and he was maternal to the MAX. "Do you need anything?", "Are you comfortable?", "Is there anything I can get you?" And he made us root beer floats, and I said, "Thanks, Mom!" and so an era began.
So now that we're all on campus for real, we still call him Mom, and I've taught other people who barely know him to use it as well. And he LOVES it. Muahahaha. And he took us out for breakfast one day, and dinner another, and we're very frequently in attendance at Zeta Psi. And he helped us paint our room, and he helped Justen buy his books, and he celebrated Kiki's birthday with us, and he's adorable.
He has this little dent in his chest where he can rest beers. And he's from Minnesota and says "car" funny.
But enough Mom!love.
I have a couple of psets due Friday that I should definitely probably have already started. But I'm totally not in the mood. So I'm just hanging around in my dorm room bored while Lauren works on calc or something and makes me feel like a slacker.
I want to go find people to visit, but I'm too lazy. And all the people I want to visit are in East Campus and each floor has its own locked entrance, so I'd have to sit outside the door looking pathetic until someone let me in. Or I suppose I could call them, but that would ruin the element of surprise.

i don't seem obvious, do i?
College life is going fab, with the exception of some physics crap due tomorrow night.
Have been slutting it up at the frats, because our male friends are too lame to admit that they don't actually want to pledge. So we hang out & get free food & feel guilty because they are SO DARLING. & I would pledge in two seconds if I had a penis.
I did laundry and tidied up my half of our room and it really probably is the best dorm room ever. We stole a sketchy chair from outside the laundry room and brought it up. And used our amazing MIT skillz to fit the door up the too-narrow stairs and through the too-narrow fire exit. And "sanitized" it with Lysol wipes.
Have been watching a lot of movies lately: Sin City, the Family Guy movie, Fight Club, Bring It On, Mr & Mrs Smith, and Kill Bill: Vol 1.. Except I slept through a lot of Kill Bill.
And I went grocery shopping by myself yesterday! And bought lightbulbs and peanut butter & nutella & bread & bananas & Reese's Puffs cereal. Felt so grown-up. And only two random men commented on my hair as I walked there and back.
Still need to buy my textbooks. >.> <.<

Do you know what's fun?
Listening to other people's iTunes music via the bexxx network.
Too bad I'm too lazy/stupid to figure out how to steal it. [edit: this is MIT. problem solved with minimal effort on my part.]
In other news, classes have started, so I've had to get up circa 8 of the clock. Except for Wednesday, when I slept through a recitation.
Currently I have a two hour break between classes, so I'm doing laundry. And at some point, I might look for my textbooks. Which I still haven't bought. Because I am really bad at college.
Except I had my first calc lecture yesterday and it was totally stuff I already knew the SHORTCUTS for & I was like if this whole class is a repeat of last year, I might kill myself. Granted, I don't think I did any homework assignments in bc calc, so I probably could do with some practice, but I did manage to get an A/pick up on a few things. Like how to take an effing derivative.
Oh, well.
And: my room is a happening hang-out spot. What what.

diary of a sketchmagnet
My dorm room is officially fabulous. We painted it fiesta pink with summer savory [i.e., green] accents this weekend.
Go team 106B!

And we had an impromptu dance party after to celebrate:

Otherwise, I don't really remember what I've been up to. Had my first class today. Fun.

you spin me right round
I officially have a real roommate now, and it's Lauren from WTP, which is pretty much awesome. AND I got to stay in my first floor corner room, which means no moving my stuff. Cha-ching!
The only possible drawback is I've been hearing all sorts of rumours about the upperclassman who shares our suite. "Tolerable at times," "uptight Christian," "elitist indie rocker." His blog is actually right here, but we haven't met him IRL yet. So I guess we'll see!
I know it'll be nothing like this when classes start, but for now I'm seriously having so much fun. Even when my friends tease me about my jangling room keys and the drunk bi girl who came on to me. I'm quite a hottie.
Last night I rode halfway across campus in a grocery cart, even up stairs through the Infinite Corridor. Except the ride kind of came to a bad end when Justen pushed the cart [with me still in it] onto the lawn directly in the path of the sprinklers. Yeah. My friends are kind of assholes, but it's okay, because I'm a bitch to them, too.
A favourite pastime is playing Lauren's salutatorian speech [which is on the Internet] really loud over my speakers. She HATES it. We're hoping to memorize her entire speech, or at least the principal's introduction, so we can quote it whenever we see her.
I finally got my schedule, which won't make much sense to non-MIT students.
5.111 - Lec: MWF12 / R12: TR11
8.01 - TR9-11,F9
17.S10 - W3-5
18.01 - Lec: TR1,F2 / R02: MW10
21H.104 - TR2-3.30
It's basically chem, physics, and calc plus "riots, strikes, conspir: am hist" and my race, ethnicity, and gender seminar, which sounds like it will be a lot of free food and fun.
I'll leave you with a picture of my former roommate [we'll be painting the walls today hopefully]:

Speech bubble & butcher knife courtesy of ridiculous Lauren, who ruins everything she touches.
And here's my room when it was still basically a single, before we rearranged it, and tidied up:

Yes, that's a fireplace. Lots of possibilities for painting that mofo. Also, there are three windows behind the camera, so the room is more gangster than it might look.
Did I mention I love it here?
