On the 8th of March 1908 15,000 working women demonstrated in New York City for shorter working hours, better pay and an end to child labor, initiating a call for "Bread & Roses." The first International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland by over one million women and their allies. In 1975 International Women's Day, now celebrated on March 8th, was given official recognition by the United Nations.
