We received more than 36,900 applications for only 9,700 admission spaces

We have considered your application for admission to the Berkeley campus of the University of California. After careful review, we are sorry that we are unable to offer you admission for the fall semester 2005.

I'm kind of glad. It makes me feel normal to get rejected by at least one school. :D

& it makes my decision easier, since Berkeley was prolly my second choice.

Narcipost

This morning Aaron Todd, who I'm pretty sure is an indie rocker disguised as a high school student [mostly because of his hipster sunglasses & shaggy hair. . . & talking of hipster sunglasses, I pretty much want to copulate with this pair], taught me a new word, which he learnt from Wired magazine [dork!].

It pretty much applies to every post evar, esp. this one.

Dear Katherine, Congratulations! It gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the University of Pennsylvania as a member of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Digital Media Design Program.

&

Dear Ms. Cheney, I am delighted to inform you that the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid has voted to offer you a place in the Harvard Class of 2009.

So I'm a little bit proud, but I also feel kind of guilty [I was baptized Catholic, okay? :P]. Like, there are people who maybe really wanted to go to these schools and they were their top choices, but I got in instead. & I mostly want to go to MIT.

But whatevz. C'est la vie.

Also, UC Berkeley is like "decisions will be available sometime this evening, which in California time, means NEVAR EVAR!!!!!!11one"

There's just something aesthetically pleasing about that.

The past five days, in review

[I know, it's a lot of words. But pretend it was spread out over a lot of days. You can wade through it, I promise. <3]

W: Attended some stupid MIT reception for local accepted students, for which some people were too cool. The first person I tried to talk to [well, after the sophomores whom I asked if they were alumni] was slightly creepy/possibly autistic. And then the next girl was really shy, too. And I was like -_-. But the current students there were really friendly/fun to talk to. & there were a few cute boys, except one was like, "yeah, I'm either going to Duke or Harvard." The other one had bleached blonde hair & kind of reminded me of Jude Law [>.<;;], but apparently he only bleached his hair for swimming. So I guess it's not just Abington swimming that does stupid things to the hair of otherwise perfectly nice boys. Of course, with my hair as it is, perhaps I shouldn't talk. But at least I don't shave stupid designs on my head.

So yeah, and there was an a capella group that was pretty good. I bought their CD, which features, among other things, 'Space Oddity.' Oh, David Bowie. Plz have my children.

Th: Financial aid package from MIT arrived. Pretty sweet. Basically I only have to pay like $1500 and my parents have to pay ~$5500. So, yeah. W0rd. Plus, and I'm not supposed to tell anyone except my immediate family until May 4, but tod. I got a $2500 scholarship, and I'm fairly sure MIT takes outside scholarships out of self-help. Paying for college anxiety = mostly alleviated.

Also, on Thursday teh fam went downtown to dye Easter eggs. Made some really sweet ones. Esp. because some of them were freshly boiled, so they were still warm and the heat melted the crayon when you drew on them. So it was pretty much awesome. My favourite is prolly the yellow flower on the blue, but I also drew Captain Planet & on the other side it says: "I'm your powers combined."

F: Mad cleaned my room. Like, you can see the floor now. And the huge explosion of clothes everywhere is now mostly confined to a single laundry basket by my dresser. It's kind of starting to become a pile again, but I'm trying.

Sienna called me & we went [w. a freshman at UDel who graduated last year] to this benefit concert of local bands for Building With Books that she wanted to go to because this boy she thinks is cute [even though he has a girlfriend x.x] was in one of the bands. So we get there at like 6 o'clock. It is still light out and there are these four punk rock guys on the porch of a house. So we go up and Sienna's young lover is like, "Awesome, you came."

So we follow them into the house, through the kitchen with someone's mom standing there, and then down these dark steps to the basement. It is about a hundred percent shady. In the basement are all these goth/punk kids, except it's so dark, you can just see their eyes glittering. So we look around, exchange glances, and then slowly make our escape [no sudden movements lest we startle them]. "We'll be back ~7:30 [when boytoy's band is supposed to play]."

So we go to Panera/Rita's Water Ice & waste time by eating. Mmm, food. Oh, and we stop at the mall, so our driver can buy some special lip gloss.

Then it's back to the concert-in-a-basement. We descend into the darkness [okay, there was a blacklight & a couple of other coloured lightbulbs, so it wasn't pitch black, but still] and take over an easychair, whence I try to send Sienna hateful txts about what a dumb idea this was, except I have no service because we are in a basement.

I mean, it was kind of cool. There were all these little kids sitting kindergarten-style on the floor in front of two guitarists from Formerly Known [local band]. I suppose if you were friends with all of them, it would be pretty much awesome. But I knew like ~5 people there.

So after a million years, the band we were there for finally played. & then we peaced out.

But it was fun to hang out with Sienna. & we mostly played RL MST3K. Making fun of other ppl = good times. OMG, we had such a good one while we were waiting in the car for Becka to get her lip gloss. There was this car diagonal from us with a guy wearing a newsboy hat & his girlfriend. And we had an entire argument for them. And then they got out of the car and made up/out. It was perfect.

S: Went to Chestnut Hill with KT&Marisa. Bought lunch at Farmer's Market & there were no seats inside, so we went out to the picnic tables outside, except there was a slightly creepy homeless man at one of the tables, so I kind of veered away & we had a conference to decide whether we wanted to eat by the homeless man. Eventually, we were like, okay, whatevz. And ironically, we, three harmless teenage girls, scared him away. So, yeah. I had a veggie burger + brown and wild rice pilaf + sweet potatoes. Mmm.

For dessert, we had gelato. Except the smallest size was way too huge. But we got to sit in these cool seats at the counter, so that was pretty much awesome.

& then we wandered through bourgeois shops, reveling in the cuteness & vomiting at the price tags. At this jewelry store where KT made a necklace for prom out of these metallic lavender pearls [it's cuter than it sounds], I was accosted by the store owner who thought I was trying to take pictures of her ware with my phone. [I was looking at the picture of my prom dress to compare its colour to the jewelry.] When I explained, she was all apologetic, but she was like, "See, this woman came in and started taking pictures of everything and she was the daughter of my competitor." Which made me laugh a little, but only inside, as propriety demands.

& I bought some hot pink fishnet knee-highs, which I wore yest. for Easter. Oh, and some cute pencils/pen from Borders. And I was browsing Ann Coulter's How to Talk to Liberals (If You Must) and I almost choked on my own bile/incredulity. Talk about polarization.

Also, there was this "young adult's" book called Piratica, which I really wanted to read, which made me feel lame. But maybe the library has it. >.> <.<

Sat. night my aunt/pseudo-aunt and uncle came out for dinner/college basketball/boardgames. 13 Dead End Drive is such a classic. & we played this German card game, "Elfer raus!", which was okay.

S: Easter. I dressed in my Easter finest for dinner at my aunt's. [Easter finest: a white lacy dress that my sister pointed out is supposed to be worn under other clothes + shiny dark pink collared t-shirt + pale peach sweater + pearls + knee-high fishnets + white heels from sixth grade graduation. >.> <.< It was pretty much awesome.

After food, we watched an episode of Lost in Space. Also took children outside to run around the block, expending energy.

Colin downloaded Pong and Tetris to my phone because I didn't have any "good games." Pong is pretty boring, but I hrt Tetris. It reminds me of how everyone in my classes plays it on their graphing calculators every period evar.

School tom. Bleargh.

I need a thesis about the Weather Underground. I borrowed The Way the Wind Blew from the library but it hasn't really helped in my thesis quest yet.

Do you know what's really cool?

Realising I had unwittingly taken a physics quiz involving cross products with my calculator in radians [which I only figured out when I was doing my homework ton. for like the first time in years and I noticed that the sine of 90 definitely isn't 0.8 something]. I rock hardcore.

Don't worry, though, I'm still clinging to my A [91.83].

In more exciting news, my cellphone faceplates arrived tod. They are pretty much awesome.

Except actually attaching it was pretty intense. I mostly almost broke it about ten times and definitely scratched some circuitboard with a screwdriver in the process of disassembling it. And then when I had put it back together, it turned on momentarily and then went black and refused to do anything.

So I thought because I had started taking it apart without turning it off first [because I am just that ditzy] that it was never going to work again. But then, wondering if perhaps the battery wasn't secure, I realised that the pad which I couldn't figure out earlier was actually to press down the battery. So I attached it and now my phone is perfect and beautiful.

Talking of perfect and beautiful, in honour of the first day of spring, I shaved my legs yest. for like the first time in afinity days [= all winter]. So they are pretty much silky smooth & hair-free now. & I'm prolly wearing fishnets [two pair, different colours, a fashion trick I learned from a mannequin in the mall] tom. to celebrate.

My gym friends and I are pretty much awesome at ping pong. We play full court, which mostly involves the ball never actually hitting the table plus ricocheting off innocent bystanders. Cha-ching!

Are you a different race than you think you are?

I pretty much hate quizzes, but I just had to share this one.

I don't really have anything else to say. Except there was a tolly hardcore concert eighth period Friday. It made me want to be a sailor when I grow up. \m/

My brother & mother are on some boy scout camping trip. & my mom stole my cell phone. & the house is kind of empty-ish. & we have no car. R0x.

I am pretty much an awesome bowler.

& don't worry, my C in calculus is now an 86, thanks to about three hours of AP problems for extra credit. Still have a B in Am. Studz, but that's been the case every marking period for like the entire marking period. And then miraculously it's an A by the end.

And my B in health is now a 103.25. I got a 98 on my test on the human reproductive systems because I pretty much am a reproduction genius. Ask me anything, like whether fluoride toothpaste lowers sperm count.

And while we're on the subject of grades, here is my gov class.

Me: *turns in paper*
. . .
Two seconds later.
Teacher: *returns paper, unmarked*
Me: *to Miriam* Do you think she graded this?
Miriam: *shrug*
Me: Whatevz. I'll check Lettergrade later.
. . .
Five days later.
Me: *checks Lettergrade* 0/25. -_-

Most useless. class. evar.

And that is my official school update for you. Isn't it exciting? Don't you just wish senior year would never end? College? Psh! Who needs it? </faux!enthusiasm>

Et tu, Brute?

Woke up this morning with killer sore throat & sexy deep voice that accompanied it, ker-ching!

Hannah gave me an Ultimate Kate Mix last week & it is pretty ultimate, let me tell you. I am pretty much in love with every song on it. Thx, H. <3

And now, since everyone is intimidated by my comments system [? unless you have some other excuse for the dearth of recent comments, excluding R. & Nate. . . okay, to be fair, M. gave me IRL comments & I know Lin reads this because she quoted me on her blog, but no one else comments. . . & it makes me feel unloved & unvalidated, or at least slightly bored]. . . ahem. And now, since everyone is intimidated by my comments system, some discussion questions to elicit a response.

True or False.
1. Being a racist is a choice.
2. Being a liberal is a choice.
3. Believing in God is a choice.
4. Being gay is a choice.
5. Believing in evolution is a choice.
6. Believing in gay is a choice.
7. Killing babies is a choice.
8. Believing in aliens is a choice.
9. Killing godless gay liberal alien babies is a choice.

Discuss.

"What is your favourite colour?" "Blue. No, yel... auuuugh."

Poll: do you think this red transparent cell phone faceplate is actually the colour shown in the picture [i.e., hot pink] or is it really red and the photo misrepresents its true colour? Should I take a chance on that faceplate or buy this slightly more boring light pink one? Any comments discussing the inherent unnecessity of coloured cell phone faceplates will be ignored.

Last night I helped out at a dance for fifth and sixth graders at the Roslyn Boys and Girls Club. I had forgotten how much I hate small children in large numbers. They were funny to watch, though: standing ten feet apart from each other for slow dances and whispering to their friends even though the music was ear-drum-poppingly loud and it was hard to hear people speaking in normal voices. And I got to hang out with Krista [who organises it, so she was v. stressed] & Becca D'Orazio a little.

Monday is Pi Day. Lin "Oh, yeah. I'm so fucking sexy. *head turn*" Gyi had everyone in our class sign up to bring in pies/napkins/forks/drinks/&c. Hopefully we will have one badass calc party and snow Mr Miller with so much fun that he won't be able to teach the whole period. I've made a poster that says "Happy π Day, Mr Miller! from: 1st period". And there's a little note at the bottom that says "your shining face, exciting lecturse, and darling sweaters are the only reasons Jung Woo comes to school. ❤" Plus a little doodle of a flying squirrel and Mr Miller wearing a boa and saying "I guess that's what they call the squeeze theorem." & at the top it has two lines of pi: "3.1415926 etc." It's probably the best poster I've ever done.

Muaha. Muaha. *clutch*

Comments spam

Due to the inordinate amount of comments spam I was getting, my host disabled the mt-comments.cgi script.

I took some steps to prevent spam and hopefully the comments script won't get disabled again for overloading the server.

However, one of these steps is that all commenters have to register. I know, it's awful; I might as well just get a xanga, etc., etc. But you'll just have to suck it up. If you're interested in learning more, feel free to read this.

International Women's Day

Link.

On the 8th of March 1908 15,000 working women demonstrated in New York City for shorter working hours, better pay and an end to child labor, initiating a call for "Bread & Roses." The first International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland by over one million women and their allies. In 1975 International Women's Day, now celebrated on March 8th, was given official recognition by the United Nations.

Whinge, whinge, whinge

Yes, I know you can't comment. It's not my fault, I promise. But it's being worked on. [being worked on = I posted a polite question about being unable to change the permissions on mt-comments.cgi 19 minutes ago at my host's helpdesk.]

Yest. I took my sister downtown for lunch with KT&Marisa at the Cherry Street Chinese Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant. Being able to order anything on the menu = kick ass. ["Your love life will be happy and harmonious."] Then we wandered around Chinatown and I had to restrain myself from making impulse buys of Hello Kitty merchandise and Pocky.

And I don't even like Hello Kitty, but there was this tote bag that spoke to me. Not literally, of course, but we had a special moment. Until I came to my senses and realised I didn't want to spend $24 on a low-quality Hello Kitty bag. Oh, well. Perhaps another time.

I also received a belated birthday/xmas gift in the form of a kickass Klipsch "personal audio system." My favourite part is turning the subwoofer all the way up and feeling the thumping. >D And you can connect them to practically anything, which is pretty awesome. Definitely an excellent dorm accessory for impromptu dance parties. Oh, the possibilities.

Tod. in physics we had to turn in a sheet of nice things about all our fellow classmates. So I was doing it in lunch the period before physics and it mostly sucked ass because I haven't really had a real conversation with about half of the people in the class. I'm not going to pretend I know people I don't, so I ended up writing things like "his eyes twinkle like diamonds" and "when she talks to you, you feel like you're the most special person in the world." All these carefully crafted comments were specially tailored to the recipient with the guidance of R.Colz. At the very least, they'll stick out from the "has a good personality" comments.

& we got out from school at one, due to snow. Which is ridiculous, because yesterday it was gloriously warm. And this morning it was raining. So it's either the apocalypse or a hole in the ozone layer. I'm inclined to blame Bush for either.

March 1: first snow day of the school year

And it's about fucking time. Unfortunately I have to write a seven-page rough draft about The Handmaid's Tale for my English class and do about a bazillion physics problems. Of course, since both of these items are technically due tod., I suppose it's fortunate we had a snow day in the first place.

Yest. we were released at 11:00 [ker-ching!], which means I haven't had a full school day since last Wednesday. I & a few comrades went to a local pizzeria for lunch, then watched a couple episodes of Futurama, before deciding the heavy snowfall was probably making driving conditions unfavourable.

And then I did about a million physics problems because I still haven't cured myself of the not-doing-homework-on-a-nightly-basis-and-then-having-to-complete-way-too-many-
assignments-last-minute syndrome. A procrastinator's work is never done.

PS: If you have a Mac, which you probably don't [unless you are one of those elite ~8%], Quicksilver is the sexiest thing evar. I downloaded it this morning after seeing it on TechTV a little while ago, and we are pretty much best friends now.
